Private & Independent Schools

Apologies if this question has been asked before; I searched the archives and couldn't find anything. Are there private schools in DC/MD with first grade as an entry year? (Interested specifically in Norwood, WES, Maret, GDS but am interested in hearing about possible others as well.) Thank you!

| Maret and GDS both have 1st grade as an entry year. Norwood is underenrolled in K this year, so I imagine it will also have spots. |
| Georgia Irvin's book lists entry years for most schools. |
| Why don't you just check the school's websites and find out? It would only take a few minutes and the information is more reliable than what you'll find on an online forum. |

I am also interested in applying for 1st grade entry year, and Norwood is on our list as well. I called Norwood over the summer to ask this same question, and the sense I get is that there will definitely be openings. I hesitate to add much more because my memory of the conversation isn't great, but I was left with the feeling that it would be very worthwhile to apply to Norwood for 1st grade (meaning, as a previous poster indicated, that there will probably be at least a few available spots).
I also asked if they minded if we went to a tour this fall, even though we wouldn't be applying until next year, and the person I spoke with (who was very nice and helpful) said we absolutely were welcome to do the tour. Based on my one productive (and pleasant!) conversation with the admissions staff, I wouldn't hesitate to call them with any further questions I have. |
OP here--I did this before asking this forum and the information wasn't on the websites--thanks for the helpful advice though.

Maret does take in some new kids at 1st grade. Other schools do as well, but only through attrition. Unfortunately, many schools will not know if there will be an opening until late Spring or early Summer.
|
| Maret takes in 4 to 6 new first graders. There are 10 applicants for every spot. Four to six are accepted and the other 55 are waitlisted. |
| Just curious--who typically applies for 1st grade? Is it mostly people who just moved to town? People who wanted their children to finish a 3-year Montessori program? People who tried the local elem for kindergarten and decided it wasn't for them? |
All of the above.
|
| People who got rejected prek and K |
I'm assuming this is a joke? (If not, someone would really have to a glutton for punishment if they continued to apply after being rejected two years in a row!)
|
| People really do that??!!! |
| sure. I know family who got rejected for pre-K and K at Maret but kept trying and finally got in at 1st. Perseverence pays off for some folks I guess. |
But Maret starts at K, not Pre-K. |
