| DS will be old enough to take snowboarding lessons this winter. he's a novice skier having only done it 5/6 times in the past years. do i let him start snowboarding or continue skiing until he's got that under his belt? he wants to learn snowboarding but so is every other boy on the planet i think... tks! |
| I would let him choose. |
| Really not important to first become a good skier before learning to board, the 5-6 times he has skied at least makes him aware of how the snow "feels" and something about lifts. Snowboarding has almost completely taken over among kids, especially boys, and it is pretty much a completely different skill, so being a great skier doesn't really help that much in learning to board. So let him choose (and boarding is simpler in terms of equipment, and getting around, no poles, no awkward heavy boots!) |

My DS found boarding a lot harder than skiing and therefore more frustrating. Plus I think it takes more dexterity to buckly your boot in at the top of the lift (you have to have one boot unattached to the board on the lift).
So I would gauge how easily he is frustrated and how independent you think he can be with that. DS did boarding for a couple of years and switched to skiing, likes it better, actually. |
Same here; my DS prefers skiing to snowboarding. |
aren't all 8yo like that?

My DS is 10 and he skis. He doesn't care that much for the terrain park and prefers hitting the advanced slopes. We skied out west last winter and he really liked glade skiing.
Let your son try snowboarding, he might decide to come back to skiing |
