Dumb question about finding a job.

How do you get a job with a company that does not list a phone number. I prefer not to post my resume online, and I would like to contact someone to find out where to mail it. This is a silly question, but these companies have put up such a wall that it is near impossible to contact anyone. Has anyone else experienced this? Do I need to hire someone to help me?

Not a dumb question!

First, try anywho.com or whitepages.com

If you have a physical address, try a reverse lookup on on of the above sites. If you don't, see the bottom of the website for clues about a mailing addy.

If that fails, go look them up on the secretary of state's website or your state's corporation comission and see if you can find an address there.

Thanks.

Has the company indicated a preference for online applications? If so, I don't think you get too far in the process if you refuse to play by their rules.

I'm a former corporate recruiter and the reason why companies don't post their contact information or individual contact information is that loads and loads of unqualified people and outside recruiters will begin to inundate them with emails/phone calls and faxes. If you feel you are truly qualified you should submit the resume the way they would like it submitted and try to find an email address for the hiring manager or a higher up at the company. That approach will usually get you through the morass of resumes that the recruiter is dealing with. If the hiring manager gets ahold of the resume of a qualified person you are far more likely to get an interview than if your resume is sitting in a pile on the recruiter's desk. I'm not sure that mailing a resume is going to do much for you.

Good luck

How do I get the e-mail addresses.
Is it worth hiring a recruiter?

Do you know the name of the company? If so, call the main number and see if you can get through to someone in the department you want to work in. Is there a professional organization where you might be able to network your way to right person? Could you post the name of the company/department here? Perhaps a DCUM/D could help you get to someone who knows someone.

Ask ask ask everyone you know until you find someone who knows someone at the company..and don't disregard the internet application, if you are qualified you may get noticed right away.

You mentioned hiring a recruiter and I would say no for a couple of reasons. First, the company may be trying to hire without using a recruiter and once you are presented by a recruiter you would "belong" to the recruiter and it would be difficult for the company to proceed with your candidacy any other way. Secondly, they may have already hired a recruiter and would not be interested in establishing a relationship with another search firm - again you'd be hands off. Unless you know the recruiter they are working with - or unless you are so confident in your qualifications and know that they would do anything to hire you, I would advise against getting your own recruiter. Lastly, search firms almost always are working for the placement fee (which they get from the company and is typically between 25% and 35% of the salary) NOT the candidate which means they would sell you out so fast your head would spin.

Good luck.

Have you tried investigating LinkedIn for contacts at the company?
