This is making me crazy, and I am 8 weeks along! I cannot stomach going into the kitchen because it makes me sick but I am hungry for something! Help! When will this go away? I want to eat but can't bring myself to deal with any smells or look at foods I do not like. |
Mine lasted from 6 weeks to 10 weeks.
Carbs worked for me - warm pita bread, toast, etc. |
I was simultaneously VERY queasy and VERY hungry for most of my first trimester. I also wanted almost nothing but carbs. Eating frequently helped me a lot. If I ate, the queasiness subsided. |
One thing that really helped me with nausea was having a carbonated drink - like club soda or ginger ale. Carbs also helped somewhat, as did eating frequent meals. Good luck! |
I was this way from 6-10 weeks. I am 11 weeks today thank goodness! I lost about 12 pounds. The only things I could stand to eat were plain potatoes or fries, and lots of apples and plain baguette from whole foods. The apples really helped the hunger pains and actually helped the nausea subside. I never ate apples before this but they were a lifesaver. This is the first week I have been able to eat regular food so hang in there. Hopefully it will subside for you around the 10 week mark as well. |
Mine only lasted a couple of weeks (7-10) and soy chips really helped. Not the cheese flavored ones, just plain, salted soy chips. |
with my first, carbs worked great, at 12 weeks it all ended..felt great. My 2nd, nothing worked, lost almost 18lbs in first trimester. lasted 16 weeks. Yuck. Good thing our memory laspes are there would be no 2nd, or 3rd. |
Ugh - the first trimester! I reverted to the eating habits of a fussy 4 year old. The only things that I could stand were rice, pasta, toast, cereal, yogurt, crackers, string cheese and applesauce. I felt queasy and heartburny all the time, but never actually barfed. The only thing that made me feel better was to eat small amounts of one of the above foods every hour or two. I couldn't even talk about or think about certain foods - my poor husband didn't know what to eat or talk about. By week 10 or 11, I was able to eat salad again, and I felt quite normal by week 16. It gets better - those weeks just seem like AN ETERNITY. Just eat what you can stand to eat, take your prenatal vitamins, don't worry, and I hope you feel better in a few more weeks. |
Oh yeah, I'm 13 weeks and opening the fridge some days still sets me off.
Take-out is your friend. Also, try to eat some protein with the carbs--it will help you feel full a little longer. I can't do regular scrambled eggs (even though I cook them almost daily for my 4 year old) and just having muffins or toast for breakfast is not cutting it. |
With pg #1, I threw up many times a day from wk6 until...the day of delivery. I ended up taking zofran which reallys helps, but I lived on tater-tots. I know it's not the most nutricious food, but plain bread didn't work.
Now pg with #2 and at wk 18 I see no signs of slowing down with the vomiting again. Tater-tots are my go to lunch/dinner on really bad days. I find that it takes the hunger pangs away and gets me through the next day. Luckily with the zofran, I can get more to stay down most days. If it doesn't get better soon, I would ask your dr about zofran in order to get something of value in you. |
If I can just stomach a little something (even ginger ale, apple, crackers) then I can do better munching a little more.
For me, it was just those first few bites that made me the most quesiest, but once I got through that I found that having a little something in my stomach made it easier for me to eat more. |
I found during the first weeks that I felt most sick when my stomach was empty, so even though sometimes nothing sounded good, I really tried to force myself to eat something as non-offensive as possible whenever I started feeling sick - sometimes just a plain piece of bread would do the trick. Frequent, small meals were the only way I got through the nauseau.
This does pass - hang in there! |
Ginger really helped me. Ginger chews and ginger lemonade (I got mine at Trader Joe's, but I know they are available elsewhere), REAL ginger ale. They would take the edge off the queasiness so I could actually eat something. |
I also had a lot of problems eating a bite of anything unless my stomach felt settled, and found that Tums helped (sometimes) and also found Papaya extract to help a ton -- unfortunately I didn't discover this until I was already in my second trimester so most of the nausea had passed, but it still helped a ton. I bought mine at Whole Foods, but you can probably get them other places. They are small little pill things (not the actual papaya...) and taste a little sugary so they (hopefully) don't make you feel sick when you take them. Anytime I felt sick, I'd pop one or two and it usually did the trick! |
