High-Risk at Georgetown

Anonymous
Due to certain previous conditions, I will be labeled a high-risk pregnancy and will end up having a c-section at Georgetown University hospital when the time comes. I know this definitively. My previous hospital experiences have been at Sibley, but that is not going to be an option for me, so I am hoping there is someone out there who would be willing to share their Georgetown experiences with me. Even better if you happened to be a patient at Reiter & Hill at the time of delivery. I just can't seem to find any information on their Labor & Delivery unit. Thanks in advance!

I had a c-section at GUH a year ago, it wasn't planned (after long labor) nor was I high-risk. I had a good experience with the hospital overall. The post partum nurses are good, and they have lactation consultants available so that was very helpful. My daughter spent 3 nights in NICU, the care there was phenominal and the staff were excellent (but hopefully you won't need to worry about the NICU!). It wasn't very busy when I was there, I think there were only 2-3 other women there during my whole stay (they have 16 pp rooms), but I don't know whether or not that is typical. I wasn't a patient of Reiter and Hill so I can't help you there. If you have any specific questions about the surgery or anything else, please ask away. GUH is known as an excellent hospital for high-risk deliveries. You can also schedule a visit to the hospital and check it out, but I don't know if they will let you see the OR (we had a tour as part of the childbirth class and they only showed the L&D rooms). Good luck!

Re. Reiter & Hill -- I believe only the Georgetown OB practice delivers at Georgetown hospital. There have been many good things said on this board about Georgetown generally. Though the OB office visits have their perils, most people seem to have relatively positive things to say about deliveries there.

I delivered at Georgetown 3 weeks ago. I was with the Georgetown high risk practice (Dr. Collea). I had a great experience. The nurses were amazing, and I was very impressed with all of the residents and doctors. It is a teaching hospital, so there will be lots of med students and residents checking in on you- I personally liked this, as I felt I was getting a lot of personal attention (and when I actually delivered ,there were 9 people in the room assisting!). The L&D rooms are very nice, post-partem rooms are okay. I wasn't as impressed with the post partem nurses, but they were fine.
After my experience, I would never deliver anywhere else. Thankfully, my high risk issue turned out fine, but if it hadn't, I don't think there is a better place I could have been.

Thank you all for your input. It is re-assuring that people out there have good things to say about the hospital and their L&D team. It definitely puts my mind at ease! Thanks again!

Regarding the visits from Residents and med students, if these get excessive - ask if you can stop them. (Just speak to your Dr or Nurse). I had no problem with them as I believe that everyone needs to learn - but I know others have issues with all of the visits.

I delivered twice at GT and loved that it was a small quiet hospital where you have a private room. (There is 1 shared room).

I believe that the also put wifi in which might be nice since you know you are going to be there for a few days for recovery.
