What exactly are the ages for pre-school, K and pre-K?

I am confused... we have a nanny take care of our DD now, but I want to start planning for the future... we want private school, so when should I start thinking of pre-k or pre-school?
I read in some schools they ask for pre-school recommendations for pre-k? What if she didn't go to pre-school?
As you can see I am totally clueless, help!

Most children are 4-5 in Pre-K and 5-6 in kindergarten. Preschool varies. Some kids start at 2, some at 3. When you apply to private school depends on what age you want your child to enter. Some private schools have nursery pre-k and k, and some just pre-k and k, and lastly some just have k. So a lot depends on what schools you are looking at. Our child started private school in Pre-K, but was at a nursery school before then.

If you are interested in private school in this area, preschool is not an option but required. I suspect very few children are enrolled in private preKs that have not attended preschool.

That's simply not true. Don't contribute to these types of generalities. Plenty of kids in my kid's prek (he went to Beauvoir) did not attend preschool. Many did, many didn't.

How long ago was that?

I'm sure there is a 4 year old child out there who has never attended preschool, but I have not met him or her. Could the be circles I run in.
