How else to start saving for retirement other than the state pension system?

Anonymous
I started teaching in MD last year and we have a mandatory 7% contribution to the MD State Pension System. I am almost finished paying off my student loans and want to start saving that extra money in a retirement fund. Any suggestions for me?

If you don't get a specific referral, perhaps you can locate a financial planner near you:

Congratulations on starting teaching and good for you for thinking ahead!

Vanguard IRA, preferably a Roth if you qualify.

T. Rowe Price (Roth) IRA...I did it at 23 and making 29K. Minimum of $50 a month autopayments. I think its up to $100 a month now. I had intended to go with Vanguard, but they required $1000 initial investment, which I did not have at the time. 6 years later, I'm so glad I started!

When I was a State employee, we were offered a 457 plan (with a meager match). Is that offered to you? No penalty for early withdrawal.
