Is she going to answer any of the questions that have been posed to her there, including her position on the Arlington Gender Identities Alliance who had requested her thoughts on a few issues. Mary responded to their request, Miranda did not. But I guess those issues don't appeal to her base.

or maybe she just hasn't gotten to submitting a written response yet. She is apparently out and about soliciting votes.

I am an APS parent and this is exactly the kind of feel good woke paper pushing thing that I don’t want the Board to be focussing on.
I want them discussing and voting on issues that pertain to schools and that effect schools and make an impact on education. Maybe if they had demanded more be done to get summer school and pushed for alternatives and staffing plans early and insisted on a less paltry compensation maybe there would be more summer school.
Then when they get that all done they can turn to stuff like this.

We would have summer school for all kids who need it if APS hadn’t used Covid relief funding to cover their budget shortfall. That money was supposed to be spent on measures that would 1) provide better virtual instruction when necessary and 2) pay for things that would get kids back into the classroom.

But no, that’s not what APS used it for.

Oh man. In that post, when explaining that she’s a life-long Democrat, she says her views reflect those of the “Democrat party.” According to Wikipedia, this is an epithet to describe the Democratic Party that is used disparagingly by Republicans. It’s literally the way Republicans mock the Democratic Party. If she was trying to persuade her readers that she’s a democrat, that probably wasn’t the way to do it.

Saying her kids are at a school in south Arlington does not paint an accurate picture. Her kids were very much in north Arlington elementary schools and now in Kenmore MS - a school literally on the south side of Route 50 - and are likely to attend their districted north Arlington high school.

As a parent whose children are solidly in south Arlington schools from a high poverty ES to a high poverty MS to Wakefield, I don't think this is what most people conjure up in their minds when they hear someone from north Arlington sent their kids to Kenmore. They are still very much north Arlington folks.

Well, Kenmore is the highest poverty MS and not the one MK is zoned for. So, your point is what? Southie here with kids in a Title 1 school and zoned to high poverty MS-HS, voting MK, who has been endorsed by basically all the community advocates who work to help Title 1 ES like mine.

Wanted to add that the economically disadvantaged kids from Barrett, Barcroft, and Carlin Springs ES are zoned to Kenmore. APS doesn’t give or designate any schools beyond ES Title 1 money, preferring to target ES instead, but KMS would qualify given the percentage of disadvantaged students. It’s absolutely a “South Arlington” school in that sense.

Yes, it is. I don't dispute the nature of Kenmore MS at all. As I stated, mine attended a high poverty elementary as well as (the second highest FRL) MS, TJ which would also qualify for Title I. My point is that it does not necessarily paint an accurate picture of the candidate's experience in APS schools just because they chose to detour to Kenmore between wealthy elementary and high schools, and that's the only south Arlington school they are a part of. When someone says the candidate's kids attend south arlington schools, the more likely assumption is that they attended elementary in south arlington. That is not the case and is very different from attending McKinley and living in a north Arlington neighborhood. The person thought the previous poster was misrepresenting the candidate, and I think saying her kids attend a south Arlington school - a middle school and only middle school - is also debatably misrepresentational.

We’ll agree to disagree then. I think the fact that her kids opted into a high poverty school, even if “only” for MS which, speaks to how she and her family see our different school communities, and from that experience I believe that she is aware of the needs of a “South Arlington” school in a personal way, not just in an academic way that her CCPTA experience might suggest. So she’s not just a typical North Arlington candidate. And MT is not a typical South Arlington candidate, either, in that she could afford private school to meet her child’s needs.

DP. Let me know when she sends her kids to Wakefield instead of Yorktown.

Miranda can get back to me when she sends her kids to the neighborhood school in Green Valley (Drew) or even to APS.

Notice how she conveniently didn't mention that she has one kid in private and the other in an option program. (The third is too young for APS).

I believe the oldest was at Drew before the pandemic and hopes to go back.

"hopes to go back?"

I hope to win the lottery and retire early.

You don't want them to support LGBTQ kids? Ok, then we have different opinions. Sadly, I'm not surprised that Miranda supporters don't care about LGBTQ kids. You're proving PP's point.

Do you prefer a S Arlington family who sends their kids to private school? Because that's what Miranda is.

DP. She sent one of her children to private for part of a year due to extenuating circumstances related to a pandemic. Stop manipulating and exaggerating.

The more Kadera supporters go low and try to slime Turner, the more convinced I am that it’s because they can’t come up with anything positive their candidate had to offer as an alternative.

Agree.

You're fine with campaign volunteers intentionally misleading voters, but pointing out basic facts like where their kids go to school is "sliming" someone? As
This whole thing is ridiculous. APE spreads toxicity wherever it goes. E. As.

I am not a member of APE, and the whataboutism is getting really old. I am so tired of the toxic and hypocritical behavior of Kadera supporters, and it clearly is no longer worth bothering to engage with you when all you want to do is attack, insult and mislead.

Bullsh1t. I have only pointed out misleading comments with actual FACTS.

And I’m not a “Kadera supporter”. In fact, I was very critical when she first announced. But I’ll take her over the leader of APE.

Here’s a fact for you:

Stating that a candidate put her child in private school without mentioning that it is temporary until the child can return to in-person public school makes you an a*shole.

It’s a FACT. Are you one of those aggressive dad bros? F off.

I really hope Mary isn’t quite so trashy as her supporters.

Republicans who do that don't tend to have BLM signs in their front yard, FWIW. They don't tend to be open supporters of the NAACP. They don't tend to be donors to the Democratic Party (yes, there are public records to substantiate that). Enough with the dirty politics.

This is why I'm waiting until the absolute last minute to vote. Miranda absolutely needs to let the community know her stance on LGBT youth. I can't vote for someone who will marginalize some of her charge.

Im not engaging in “dirty politics.” I’m laughing at the irony of using a disparaging term for the Democratic Party to convince voters that you are a democrat. It was funny, or at least I thought it was.

Not stating her support says it all to me.

If this was a priority for her, she already would have put something out there. The only thing she cares about is return to full time in person school NOW.

It looks like she edited the quotations in AEM, unless I'm missing it. She had time to do that, but not to answer whether she supports trans, gender nonconforming and nonbinary youth.

Do you realize how insane this sounds to normal people? It was most likely a typo from rewording and editing.

This is also a stupid gotcha. It's not up to the board members to come up with ideas for how to implement and enforce policies. They are there to review, approve and hold accountable. It sure seems like Mary Kadera would be happier with a job in the APS administration making policies and plans instead of being on the board approving them.
