Right… treatments for aging and life expectancy are expected to change over the next 50 years. I'm not sure why that would be a surprise to you but… Now you know. Insults gets long at millennials all the time, even by there by our own age group as you demonstrate. So people can sling insults at us it goes both ways. That's life- deal with it. |
Yes, but you are young. Do you know how easy it is to be skinny when you are young? No, you don't know yet. Shit gets hard after 45. |

To take a break from the fat shaming....
I really hope all the older folks (I'm one!), and especially the ones with heroic stories of home buying, get that if the young generations aren't able to afford homes, you just might find that that house you the older folks worked so hard to get might be worth less than you imagined! Seriously, stop thinking this stuff is automatically whining. They might just be looking out for your financial future! |
Regardless, that kind of shoots the "All millennials are fat and lazy" argument out of the water, doesn't it? |
Is it sad that the older people are the ones who started throwing shade first? Seems a little immature. |
| Both of you are right PPs above, it's a combination of luck, timing and hard work. I didn't have rich parents either but I grew up pretty solidly middle class down south. When I moved here I bought in a not popular neighborhood in D.C. because I had always lived among black people, since I am black so while it may have been "SCARYBLACKPEOPLE!!!!!!" for someone else, it was just my old people neighbors who helped me learn how to be a homeowner. Was this house or neighborhood my first choice? No, of course not, I was young and wanted to be closer to bars and nightlife, but my budget didn't allow for that so I bought where I could afford to get in the market and worked on making something out of it. Now I have loads of equity -- and three times the incomes -- that I can use to buy my way up into where I DO want to live. Some of this whining and boohooing is because people can't buy in the EXACT place they want to buy RIGHT NOW that is EXACTLY as perfect as they want it to be and that is shortsighted. |
Dream on sister. No medical advances will defeat time. Maybe try not ot be so ugly today. It will pay off tomorrow. |
| You can't avoid being uncomfortable for extended periods without a trust fund. If you have a trust fund you will lack character in middle age. |
There's no way your friends house dropped in value. I sold my house in Manassas City with the city schools everyone derides for 100k more than I bought it for in 2009. |
Hahahahha! I'll take less character. Thanks. |
No idea. But they sold it last year for a little less than they bought it for. It was a town around manassas, so maybe the city is hotter? Was yours a foreclosure? I think their schools were redistrcted which was part of why they moved. |
Nope wasn't a foreclosure. If their school was redistricted then that could explain their home value. My house has the same manassas city public schools it had in 2009. We bought for 250k and sold for 350k. |
Guess what, 40 year olds today are also way fatter than 40 year olds of yore

I was born in 86. DH was born in 83. We own 2 houses, one in Lorton and one in New York State that we rent.
We bought the house in Lorton with less than 20% down in 2012 for $500k. At the time, HBO was $150k, but it's now $260k. No big deal because it's appreciated almost $100k, and we can get PM I removed in a few months. I bought a house at 24 that I sold and made $25k on, we used that and some other savings for down payment. House in Lorton was a fixer upper but plenty big for two kids. South County High School seems to be a decent school as well. We have a beautiful yard, plenty of space, and easy commute via VRE. I think because we were willing to live in an area that's not "hot", we were able to buy. I like it here though, neighbors are friendly and we've made lots of friends. So millenials, there is hope. |

Wait, do I win something?
I'm thin at 40 and have owned a nice home in D.C. since I was 32. |
