International trip for 5th graders?

Anonymous
Love how everyone has the "true facts".
Give it a rest, people---there will be a fifth grade trip every year. If you don't like it, don't go. If you like it, start fundraising. If you're not at the school, why are you getting involved?

How childish, misinformed and inappropriate. What's distasteful is your slandering parents who are involved and engaged and trying to support their children, their children's classmates and this school -- many of them from the very beginning. Not sure why folks want to continue spinning these myths and half truths about this trip. If you don't want your child to go---- don't go. If you want to make sure all who want to go can go --- fundraise or donate. Otherwise mind your own business, get a life or at least keep your nastiness to yourself. I presume it's just the time we live in. I find that sad and .......extremely distasteful.

What myths and half truths?

Here are a few examples -- just from this post.....won't bother to go through the other 17 pages
1) The PA was "forced" to change a date.....
2) A group of parents "threw a fit".....
3) "Less than a third of the class is able to go".....
4) The Gala date was set before the trip date.....

Will stop there for now.

Again, if you want to make sure all who want to go can go --- fundraise or donate or find a way to help -- there's still plenty of time for that! And, this would be a lot more constructive and much less distasteful than joining a committee just so you can tell folks "to go to hell". Be a part of the solution, for most people, THAT is much more palatable!

Not the person you responded to, but your 3 and 4 are in fact truths. I was at the PA meeting and the prez stated that the auction was set well before they had knowledge of the fifth grade trip. The auctioneer was already hired and on retainer. The YY portal states that 11 children have registed for the trip. There are 30 children in the class. Okay, so it is not quite a third. HMMM!!!

I was there too. the PA was upset because the parents wouldn't be at the gala. The school actually had announced it's date first, but the PA didn't know it. NO big deal!! The portal hasn't been updated but there are now 20 who want to go now that the trip is being subsidized by the board of trustees to the tune of 50K which will mean over half the trip is paid for! No teacher or the Principal (the only two school staff going) is being funded by the trip fees.
God you all are horrible. What a mean-spirited bunch of jerks.

MONEY IS COMING OUT OF THE OPERATING BUDGET FOR THIS???!!! When do they plan to announce this to the rest of the school?
Anonymous
Not coming out of the operating budget and it's none of your business. jealous much????
Anonymous
NP here but where the money is coming from is actually the business of the rest of the school.

It really is the business of every single stake holder of a public non-profit institution to understand how and where money is flowing.

To me "subsidized by the board of trustees" means that the trustees themselves have ponied up the $. I thought that one of the important features of being on the board of a nonprofit was deep, deep pockets.

I hope that largess extends to every single student in the school when the time comes.

If it were me on the board (and filthy rich, of course), I'd subsidize the first year, but demand that the school put together a robust fundraising plan for future years' trips. Teach a man to fish, and all that.

the money went to this class from the board because they are the first, had the least amount of time to fundraise, and because the PA couldn't help them. Future groups shouldn't expect this level of largess.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but that sounds like the right move by the board. Making the trip affordable for more kids definitely sounds like a step in the right direction.
Anonymous
Yep. But trust me, the trolls will ALWAYS have something negative to say! Best to ignore and go about our business

I agree. I am proud the board did this. Now I expect people to start complaining that it is unfair for the board to do this. yadda yadda, yadda.

Thanks for acknowledging that #3 was only partially true as that was the point..... And given the additional interest and sign ups... That still is not the case. Additionally, "30 children in the class" is not an accurate denominator.

Re #4 ...to provide the full context the date might have been set - but few were apprised of the date - thus the concern about the schedule conflict.

Again, still encouraging folks to be a part of the solution. Lots of lessons to be learned all around AND tons of volunteer and donation opportunities!
