Teacher Resident - no teaching qualifications required?

Our school had two on the first day of school, so yes many of them are working.

How do you know??

It listed right next to her name in the school directory. "Teacher Resident"
I googled her. She has a 2021 undergraduate degree in theater. So someone who wanted to be an actress, realized it's impossible, and is now trying to teach without a teaching degree because it was an easy job to get. Can't wait.

So? Remember when you were all piling on teachers during the pandemic, telling them they had to go in "because the kids don't catch it", telling them they should quit if they didn't go in and any warm body would do a better job, and then accusing them of being pedophiles and groomers? How much abuse did you think people would take for 60k a year? They listened to you! You bought it, you own it now. Enjoy!

This. In 2020, at the worst of the pandemic pre vaccine, I exasperatedly asked a hypothetical question about whether these angry parents would rather have an unemployed, totally unqualified mouthbreather who couldn’t cut it as a Target cashier “teach” their kids in person rather than an experienced, qualified teacher virtually and was met with a ridiculous cavalcade of “Yes!!” “100%!!”

Cool. “Enjoy,” indeed.

Well, from most people's POV, virtual school has zero value so it could be the great poet society guy teaching it and honestly? Wouldn't matter. No one is learning especially in ES.
So yes, school with a moron teacher is better then no school at all.

ummm ok lol

There's really nothing funny about a Sophie's Choice between school with an idiot teacher and no school.

My kids got a lot out of virtual school. Also I was mature enough to realize it was a pandemic, and schools were doing what they could under difficult circumstances.

So did mine and plenty of other people's kids I know, but these people are so invested that since they couldn't get their kids to succeed in virtual learning, it was "impossible." Nope.

Is this even legal under Virginia law?

That’s good. We are missing many.

My kids didn’t get a lot out of virtual. But I sort of don’t care? Seemed to me like teachers were doing the best they could, given the situation. We were conservative that first year. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable sending them to school. They learned what they did, they will make it up, and I really honestly enjoyed the extra time we had together during that year, although I know it was a really bad time for so many.

My son's 2nd grade teacher is a resident. I'm not sure how I feel about it. She didn't seem very organized at back to school night yesterday.

LOTS of teachers teach what they don't know. I am an AP teacher and on five AP teacher fora. There are plenty of people who are assigned a new course a week or two before the year begins and they have NO content knowledge. They post in desperation, hoping that others will give them all of their materials.

+1 My kids got some learning out of virtual, but I think the time around us was valuable too. I got to talk with them more about the work they were doing, spend more time together. Sure it was hard to get my remote work done at times but it was a pandemic. I appreciate all the efforts the schools made. We weren't comfortable going out until there were vaccines and clear efficacy data so there was no way I was sending my kid to school in person--I would have homeschooled before doing that.

I also share my materials and mentor new teachers. If certified teachers teach AP in one subject they can also teach lower level class in the same subject. That is not a problem. But it will be bad for the kids if new teacher residents don't know the materials and they just give out handouts from other experienced teachers.

It’s been approved by VDOE. They determine the requirements to teach, not the General Assembly.

So someone with, say, a MS is not qualified to teach your kid in their subject field? Or are you concerned they might upend some school agenda with facts?

At this point, we just need bodies. Let’s be honest, it’s not difficult to teach. You are given a curriculum which is a guide book. Plus, everything is available to you online.

Wait, what? There’s a curriculum?! Where do I get this? (/s)

I’m going into year 13 and have never had more than a bullet point list of standards. Methinks you know not of what you speak.

But I do agree the most you can hope for at this point is a legal adult in every classroom.

There aren’t curriculums online?
