if you have a deep freezer, put a large trash bag (or 2!) filled with water into the freezer. once it freezes, if the power goes out and you need ice for a cooler just take it out and break it up with a hammer while its still in the bag. Put in to the cooler, and you will have chunks of ice, which will stay cold longer than little pieces anyway. do the same for the normal freezer, only using freezer gallon zip lock bags. These will do the same job by keeping more mass in the freezer, thus keeping it colder longer.
