Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I've noticed over the past week or so that my DD's language has really taken off. SHe's saying a lot more new words, recognizing more things, learning her numbers, colors, etc... and her pronunciation is improving rapidly. At the same time she's been WAY cranky/whiny and needs a lot more of my attention, and whines like crazy when she doesn't get it. Prior to this she would play/look at books independently for relatively long stretches of time, but for the past 5 days or so she demands me being by her side a lot more. I've heard that when children are going through major developmental milestones they regress temporarily in other areas. Has anyone else experienced this to be true? |

absolutely- and their sleep gets wacky too. We have found that our kids' sleep gets disturbed whenever they are going through a developmental leap- from rolling, crawling, etc to talking, then talking sentances, and even when they are a bit older and started talking in more complex, abstract ways we would find them coming into our room in the middle of the night.
Right now my dd is starting to talk and she is up a lot, clingy, bossy, and a little off. I just imagine the neurons firing away and driving her a little crazy! Anyway- she is our 4th and we have found it to be a true pattern with all of them, and then it gets back to normal. |
| OP here -- I hope you're right about the sleeping thing getting back to normal. Her nap has shortened to barely an hour a day and it's really hard on me! |

Hi OP,
Dr. Sears is a big believer in this theory - if you take a look at the askdrsears website, you can find some articles about it. I found his tone very reassuring when going through this with my DS. |
| op- how old is your dd? |

I have 2 kids and have experienced the same thing. Crankiness, sleep disturbances etc.
I am a big fan of Brazelton's and he calls these "Touchpoints." I find that it takes about a week for things to settle down agan.

| OP here -- DD is 21 months and language is exploding. That part is great, but the change in demeanor is rough. I will check out Dr. Sears and Brazleton -- thanks PPs! |
| Yes! We have definitely experienced this too ... and it continues through early elementary school, believe it or not!! |
