| We are considering buying a home in Rosemont. We love the neighborhood, convenient location, nearby playgrounds, & family feel. Our primary concern is related to schools. What do you do for schools? I understand the elementary school )GMason) is excellent but the middle schools are not so good. What do you (or are you doing) for middle/high school? Moving elsewhere, private (if so, where?) Any thoughts on schools and your overall experience living in Rosemont would be much appreciated. |

Most of Rosemont is zoned for Maury Elementary. Our son just started kindergarten, but so far we have been pleased. We've been in our neighborhood over a decade, so had heard good things about the school and the tour really helped confirm it. GW is the middle school- 6-8th grade). We have neighbors whose kids go through and they seem to like it. You'll hear a ton of negative stuff about Alex. City schools....some warrented and much not so much. I have some time to see how things play out, but as of right now I would send my son to GW. I am hoping in the next several years it continues to get better and better.
Overall living....can not be beat. Great community and great location. Wish I could afford to upgrade my duplex to a single family in the neighborhood. Hope that helps. |
Schools have a lot of detractors, yes. It's a pretty dysfunctional system all in all. That said, ACPS does have its boosters. |
There are plenty of DCUM folks with kids currently enrolled in the ACPS middle schools that seems very happy with it. If you search the forums, you'll also see the haters. We are in elementary with ACPS intend to stick with the district all the way through high school. Alexandria always has "scarier" test score numbers that neighboring districts, due in part to it having a higher number of FARMS and ESL students. This does not mean that the quality of education is less, and again, many parents of current students report that their children are thriving in an academically challenging environment. This thread is typical of many related to Alexandria schools: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/259564.page I suggest you read through the entire thread (it's only 3 pages). |
| I live in Rosemont and intend to send DS to Maury (he's 3.5 now). The school seems fine, and it is two blocks from our house. We will likely choose private for middle school. It's not that I have some huge thing against GW, but I can see many benefits to a smaller school for that age group, having gone to one myself. |
