Totally random question about American Girls dolls' hair

My daughter just got the Caroline doll with the long curly hair. The hair started looking kind of matted almost immediately after she got her but I am afraid if we brush it out the curls will separate or become less robust. Does anyone have experience with the curly haired AG dolls??

Im not very sure, but i think the trick they use at the AG salon is to wet, then brush.

The curly hair does not comb well. Best to leave it alone. Do not use your own brushes or combs since the oil will damage that plastic hair.

OP here...so this is going to sound even dumber, but is the hair like "permed" somehow? How do they get it to hold the curl? I thought of using water but was afraid that might also cause it to fall out. I know very little about working with human hair and even less about doll hair LOL. We have the wire brush from the store, btw.
