Blake High School

Anyone have any positive or negative impressions of Blake HS in MoCo?

Comments from parents of current and former students would be great and I also accept welcome general comments and impressions.

We are in the NEC and are deciding between the 3 NEC schools (Blake, Paint Branch and Springbrook). We have friends with kids at the other two schools but limited exposure to Blake. Thanks in advance.

A lot of girl fights. Black girls carry knives but that could be said about all high schools on the east side of the county.

In my neighborhood, most of the kids choose Blake and the parents are all happy. I have never heard about a weapons problem. I get all of my babysitters from Blake and the kids I talk to genuinely seem to love the school.

This poster has a history of racially and culturally insensitive posts. In the past, the poster has posted negative remarks about African Americans, Asians, and Jews. So, I'd take the response above with a grain of salt.

Thanks Jeff. Seeing as how we are a mixed race family, I will take those comments with a grain of something....LOL!

My friends daughter went there and loves the dance department. She is in all AP and Honors classes and doing well. Her brother, on the other hand, went private. It was her choice so she must like it.

My younger sister went there. She was also involved in the dance program and loved it. In general, she was really happy there, my mom loved the school, and was happy with the administration (though the principal who was there has since been promoted).

My daughter is there. She does not carry a knife. LOL... She really likes it. All the parents and kids really like it. We heard this before we chose Blake and it seems to be true. She is in all honors classes, plays sports and is doing very well academically. The administration seems to be very engaged and responsive. I have heard about the girl fights, but keep that in perspective. My friend who grew up in Appalacia West Virginia in the 70's told me there were LOTS of girl fights at her high school. .

"This poster" happens to know what is going on in the county. "This poster" recalls the stabbing in the parking lot of Blake that left the other girl critically injured. "This poster" also recalls the stabbing at the football game either last year or the year before involving girls.

I guess that to bring that up is "racially insensitive". The person wanted feedback on Blake and I gave it.

So these incidents mean that all "black" girls carry knives at all schools in the east county? Do you have a child at Blake or are you just repeating something you read in the news? Remember that some of us are aware of these incidents and have children at Blake. Good try defending the comment. #fail. If you don't have anything constructive to add to this conversation, I suggest you post elsewhere.

OP here. Well….this is our youngest and 4th child and all of the kids have attended MoCo schools through MS. The older three went to/attend private high schools though. We have lived in the County for 20 years so I think we have a good handle on “what’s going on” in the County generally. We just do not have much experience with Blake. We have talked to the neighborhood folks, but I wanted to cast a wider net for info.

We are not naïve. All schools have incidents and issues and we are definitely considering the big picture. I do think the comments about Black girls and East County are inflammatory and unnecessary. Look, we have heard all the stupid “stereotypes” – East County Kids are violent criminals, kids from BCC and the W’s are rich drug addicts and alcoholics and the North County kids are racist hicks. Frankly, its all BS. There are “good” and “bad” kids at every school, whether public or private.

Thank you all for responding.

I agree, OP. All schools have their issues. We really do like Blake. Good luck!

And I'll second that it's good to see a moderator here!
