I'm just feeling kinda stumped. Maybe something autumn-ish?

Vanilla is easier to clean.

For my first, it was vanilla icing with coconut. Yum!

Pumpkin spice with maple cream cheese frosting or some kind of apple with caramel frosting.

We did a simple vanilla with white frosting and colored sprinkles on her cupcake. She's 1 and guaranteed to make a mess. We also wanted her to eat it, and something like carrot cake might not have gone over as well.

Chocolate is guaranteed to be a hit.

Exactly, she's 1. Unless you feed her some of the more exotic flavors already then a simple vanilla or chocolate with a buttercream frosting will go over well.

Agree with vanilla and buttercream frosting. Maybe with sprinkles?

Cream cheese pound cake. Buttercream icing.

We threw our first birthday party last month. We made three flavors for variety and to try to satisfy as many as possible. We did an applesauce muffin that was no sugar added for the kids whose parents (like us) were keeping the kids on no- or low-sugar. We did orange pecan muffins (my wife's favorite recipe) and chocolate cupcakes with white icing for those who had to have their chocolate fix. All were popular.
