How do I open a 529?

Anonymous
I want to open in dc for my older child, and probably elsewhere for younger ones. Please help.

You get them through colleges. Do some googling to find the 529 plan office at your state school. (Sometimes people shop around to other states, and you might be able to get a deal, but you'd have to know how to compare rates of return, fees, et cetera). When you've found a phone number for the 529 plan, call them up and get them to send you an enrollment packet. You might be able to get the packet online.

In Maryland if you're in the Maryland plan ( T Rowe Price, rated highly) you get to deduct a large amount of your contribution from income before state tax calculation.

Google it . . .

www.savingforcollege.com has a lot of info on all of the plans.

they differ by state. as someone mentioned, it often makes sense to take advantage of the one in your state since contributions may be tax-deductible from state income taxes.

however, some plans are just better than others. virginia's, for example, is considered one of the best in the nation.

There are also some prepaid tuition plans as well.

I have no clue what 21:06 is describing, but it is not a 529 plan.

in DC, go thru the DC plan, contribute up to $4000 and get a tax break on that amount. www.dccollegesavings.com
