looking for a good therapist

Anonymous
I terminated a pregnancy earlier this summer after a fatal disorder with the baby was diagnosed at my amnio. I had a D&E and physically am feeling healed up, but emotionally, I'm still feeling pretty rocky. Does anyone out there have a good therapist/psychologist they'd recommend I could talk to about pregnancy loss and how to gear up to try again?

Don't have a name for you, but if you do not get any rec's here, maybe ask your genetic counsellor or OB? I'm sorry you are going through this.

I am so sorry for your loss and send you best wishes and hugs.

I'm seeing Emily Wang in Rockville for infertility. While working on it, she helped me to resolve all the pain associated with a previous miscarriage, all the shame, fear and guilt. It was such a huge relief. And I'm finally at peace, with myself and with my baby. We released and resolved so much stuff, that I'm feeling like my body is waking up. For the first time in a long time, my uterus doesn't feel cold and gray any more. I'm so happy! The other day I was telling her that I wish someone had told me about her right after the miscarriage. Then I wouldn't have suffered so long. But here I am, finding my peace and happiness again, and looking forward to welcoming my baby into my life.
Best wishes to you! Know that there is wonderful help some where, you just need to find it. Here is Emily's contact info if you are interested: 240-328-8169. www.family-hypnosis.com

I saw Ellen Eule whose name I got through Shady Grove. I found her to be wonderful and very helpful. She sees hers clients in her home in Bethesda. I think she also has an office somewhere.

I've recently seen Lynda Mulhauser for help dealing with a pregnancy with a chromosomal abnormality. She also runs a support group for couples/women who have had to terminate a pregnancy. Her number is 202-244-9567, she's in the Air Rights building in Bethesda. I also have a list of counseling resources that I received from my genetic counselor. If you want the whole list email me with a fax number and I can fax it to you - fisher(dot)liz@gmail.com

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I know of someone of who had a similar experience (fertility issues). Through the testing process, they determined she had a blood disorder. It's important that you investigate all possible issues. I hear Dominion Fertility is very compassionate. We're all here for you and feel for you.

Checking to see if there are more recent recommendations. The list I received from my geneticist is outdated.

would appreciate the same, particularly someone who specializes in pregnancy loss

FYI, PP, if you do a search for 'therapist" on the expecting moms forum there are more responses to this question.

Some Online Groups my genetic counselor recommended were www.aheartbreakingchoice.com, www.centering.org

There are two support groups that she knew of. One is in bethesda with Lynda Mulhauser (202-244-9567) and she also sees patients privately. There's also a grou in Friendship heights with Rachel Freedman (301-529-6944). I personally saw Aimee Danielson at Georgetown (202-944-5400) and thought she was great. Another # on the list of resources i got was Sharon Covintgon (301-279-9030) but i don't know much about her.

My genetic counselor also gave me a book called "a time to decide, a time to heal.' It's basically the most depressing book ever, but on days when you are feeling really down it's nice to know you aren't the only one who has gone through this.

Hope this helps. Let your geneticist know their resources are out of date so they can update them for the benefit of the next patient.

This is the PP. Should add that those two support groups in my previous post are for women/couples who terminated pregnancies due to chromosome problems or other abnormalities, not just for general pregnancy loss.

Can any of you comment on your experience with those support groups? Were they helpful for you? Why or why not?

I terminated a pregnancy this spring for a genetic disorder and have been feeling really ambivalent about whether I should get therapy. Would love to hear from you if you have gone. Thanks.

I was referred to Sharon Covington after pregnacy loss and I can't say enough good things about her. I previously terminated an early pregnancy and did not seek support at the time. I wish that I had been a patient of Sharon's at the time.
