| At the recommendation of our pediatrician and our behavioralist, we are considering referring our kindergartener for these types of services. Does anyone have any experience with this? |

Level II services are just differentiation (grouping, etc), which your teacher should already be doing.
Level III services are pull-outs (usually an hour once a week for some sort of enrichment), but only kids in grades 3-6 are eligible. There are no tangible services available for K-2. I am curious why your pediatrician and "behaviorist" are involved. |
| I didn't even know my daughter was "receiving level II services" until I requested her AAP file in second grade. She was in the top reading, math and spelling groups and sometimes had different math homework than the other kids in her math class, and the AART said that was level II. |
In addition to all of the "good" qualities seen in gifted children, we are also experiencing some of the less desirable traits such as extreme perfectionism and frustration leading to tantrums and meltdowns. She's been screened for literally everything else (ASD, ADHD, SPD, etc.) and not found to have any of them. This is just another attempt to alleviate some of these issues. |

We attend a school which has a Young Scholars program (intended to identify gifted children from groups not historically represented). Last year in K, in about October, we received a letter from the school AART that DS was identified as being in need of the weekly pull out that would be offered. (this was beyond the normal reading groups, etc.) We just had to return a letter granting permission for him to participate. He has already begun attenting these pull outs this year. From what he talks about at home, many seem science focused, but that may just be what he talks about most.
Interestingly enough, the same DS has an IEP for social/emotional delays (found eligible in late preschool by FCPS). We suspected AS, as did FCPS and a play therapist we had begun to work with when we were at our wits end. The developmental pediatrician was uncertain when he was seen at 5 (saw many AS traits, but also was missing some important ones). Anyway, as the demands have grown, we are seeing a much more significant possibility of ADHD, we (teacher and at home) are seeing more pronounced problems with attention, even on basic tasks like getting dressed, or unpacking his school bag. Have you requested an eval through FCPS? I would talk with your child's teacher, and the AART at your FCPS school, to get their opinion to start. |
| 1st grade DS had a weekly pullout with the AART for 1/2 hour week for "puzzle time". It took place during math time in the classroom. |
| I don't think 1 hour or 1/2 hour per week would make a dent in behavioral issues. Any chance you could tough it out until 3rd? |
