I know this is a silly question but I'm due in mid-Feb w/my first baby so I'm new at this. I'm starting to think about all the stuff I have to pack for the hospital, etc. I have a cotton gown and cap for the baby to come home in but it seems like it won't be warm enough. Do I just use blankets and the Bundle Me in the carseat to keep her warm? or do I get a heavier outfit or jacket? I don't even know how the carseat works yet so I don't want to buy something that will impede the straps, etc. Any advice? |
You need some blankets or something to drape over the car seat, not a jacket or snow suit. I don't think I have ever seen one in newborn size. It would be quite an ordeal (with lots of screaming) just to get the child in and out of one.

yeah, you're good. ![]() |
A gown may not be the best thing--you have to get the car seat strap between the legs.
For the first many months I loved the carters terry-cloth sleepers. Bundle me or blankets much better than jacket. |
The funniest part is when you're packing all of this you think, "I can't believe I'm going to bring home a baby this effing small."
And then you put the new little outfit on them and it's like HUGE on them. |
I'm having the same problem deciding what to put on the baby as its "coming home" outfit. I was told in our birth class that we should have something on them that wont irritate the umbilical cord detachment area so i picked a top and bottom outfit with little footies on it. But now I am wondering if I also put on baby one of those onesies with the hole in it for the navel area to heal, will it bleed through onto the outfit. And then, will it be too cold?! Yikes |
Don't forget a warm hat - definitely a must in Feb. Just to get home from the hospital, you should be ok using a bundle-me or a really warm blanket. Might be a good idea to warm up the car before you put the baby in too. The bundle-me has slits that you can put the carseat staps through. |
I second the Carter's terrycloth sleeper and the Bundle Me. Gowns are useless in general--they ride up plus in cars you have to get the straps between the legs. Bundle Me is fabulous. |
I agree with the assessments on gowns and sleepers. I did two piece outfits for both of mine coming home, and they both looked ridiculous. Both of mine were nearly 10 lbs, and even the 0-3 month two piece outfits were HUGE on them (though 0-3 month sleepers fit just fine).
You may not need something like this for coming home..but just to give you an idea for something like a snowsuit... my MIL found this thing that was GREAT for a newborn. It looked just like a sleep sack and had a hood. AND it had a cutout for the buckle on the carseat. We used that a lot--especially since I had a December baby and a 2 year old who loved to play in the snow. I could strap the baby into her carseat carrier in the "snow suit" AND the Bundle Me, with a hat, and she was happy as a clam while her brother played. |
