How to tell what is day one?

No, I'm not as stupid as that sounds - or maybe I am - for the past three cycles, I have been getting 1-2 days of very light bleeding, then 1-2 days of nothing, and then my period starts in earnest. Has anyone else experienced this (and maybe found an explanation)?

Day one is the first day of red blood (not brown).

Also, are you charting? If not, I would recommend it. "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" is really the best resource.

My RE says Day 1 is the first day of full-flow (not spotting). If full flow is after 5 pm, the next days is Day 1.
