Anyone watch the African American adaptation of Steel Magnolias last night?

Thoughts? I was on a plane, and only saw the first 20 minutes.

No, I am white and would like to see it. Love that movie.

I started to watch it, but realized it was the same. Such a waste of time. BTW I am AA.

I watched. I was also hoping to also see the Carlina White movie but I missed it again. I liked the original Steel Magnolias better but it is that way with every remake that I watch.

I watched bits and pieces. It looked ok, but I couldn't get past Queen Latifah as M'Lynn - she seems too young to play the mom of a grown woman. I thought Phylicia Rashaad would have been more appropriate for that role (I think she played Clairee). I'll try and catch the entire movie next time it's on.

The "help" preparing for the wedding were white, and the families were black. I thought that was interesting. Some of the references were modernized. . ."If you can type and have a facebook page, you can have a past." Some of the literal dialogue from the original just didn't work. It didn't seem authentic.

I know this is pedantic, and I truly do not mean to sound nasty (although tone is of course difficult to convey online), however: Steel Magnolias is a play. Every version of it is going to be "the same."

She broke out as a rapper in the 80's. Living Single was in the 90's. Chicago was in '02. She's old enough to have a grown up child.

I was busy trying to catch up on class work and missed it, and I stupidly forgot to set my DVR. I hope they rerun it soon. I don't think I'll like it as much as the original, but I think it will be decent.

Queen Latifah is 42 and the actress who played Shelby is 26. Trust me, it was distracting. This is random, but I just googled and found out the actress who played Shelby is Phylicia Rashad's real life daughter.

If that were the case, there would be no point in restaging any play. A play is not "the same" just because it has the same script. Different case, different direction, different milieu, different context, different thrust.

She's roughly fifty years of age. The age adds up, especially for the south.

I just posted that I thought she was around 50. So, she is only 42. She seems older and has been around forever. Oh well. I guess the numbers are off.
