If earlier today your DC were offered a spot at your preferred Immersion school.

I'd take it, unless there is something else that is giving you doubts, such as a long bus ride. Your kid can always go back to the home school if the immersion school doesn't work out, but you won't have a chance at this immersion slot again.

If you are concerned that it's October and your kid will be playing catch up, the answer probably depends on your kid. It 's not like the other kids are all fluent by now. My kid entered immersion in first grade, and while it was a challenge, DC's teachers told us DC was indistinguishable from the other kids by January.

we had this hypothetical discussion in our house about when our personal "cut-off date" would be. And since immersion is meant to be an experience lasting throughout elementary school, I think we would do it at any time if offered. The trauma of changing schools once the year has started (and really, it's been a month) will be outdone by the benefit of immersion.

Like PP said, if it doesn't work out for some reason, you can always go back to the home school, but the immersion is a one-shot deal. Take it! (or don't--we might be right behind you!)

As PP suggested, it depends on your child, the grade he/she is currently in (i.e. kindergarten will be easier to enter with missing just two months, as compared to first grade and being a year and two months behind), how well your DC has adjusted to their current school and how well they adjust to new and challenging experiences in general, the strain of additional commute time and possibly hassle. It is definitely a difficult decision. Could you speak to the teachers at the school and see what their thoughts are?
