Future of Mosby Woods?

Anonymous
I overheard ( sorry pretty loud) a parent talking to another. Her child goes to mosby woods and he is in 4th grade. Due to lack of funds, the school is not planning for any field trips this year. We were planning to move close to Oakton High which means my son would have to attend Mosby woods next year. If i am paying the same county taxes, property taxes as someone who lives a mile away whose kid goes to some xxx elementary. How come my kid school cannot afford to take on field trips while the other school say xxxx elementary can? How is it a fair thing? Is the school bad in its financial admin or something?

Can someone explain this? I NEVER HAD ANY GOOD OPINIONS ABOUT MOSBY WOODS! Now it is hopeless.

I believe the PTA pays for all of our field trips. Mosby Woods is a pretty big school being an AAP center. The PTA should be able to do something for this. There are also a lot of in-house field trips which might be cheaper.

Also I think the City of Fairfax gives extra money to the schools within their boundary so you may be comparing Mosby to one of those schools.

I believe 4th graders usually go to jamestown, williamsburgh and some far away places. In-house/cheaper field trips are really not acceptable. If its a so called "AAP CENTER", they better keep up the standards in all forms of education.

our pta subsidizes the field trips (i think they spend about 9,000 of their budget for this). maybe that is why some schools go and others don't?

The issue with field trips is most definitely the PTA. Poorer schools can not really do Jamestown. At my DD's school, an AAP center that is pretty well off, children that can not afford the field trips go through the PTA.

At other schools, where the parents are poorer, Say and AAP center in Herndon or along Route 1, the PTA does not have the money to pay for subsidizing the trip. So, no one goes.

This is an example of what happens when we nickle and dime the schools.

PTA covers field trips. That being said, we still had to pay $50 for the Jamestown trip last year. We are not at MW.

I am an involved parent at MWES. THERE ARE FIELD TRIPS! In fact, 2 of our grades are going this month on different field trips. Our PTA subsidises the field trips and the kids go to Jamestown and/or Williamsburg in 4th grade. 5th grade they go to Camp Hemlock, 6th grade to Philadelphia. They do lots of away field trips in k - 3, but in the DC metro area. Never heard of an in-house field trip!

Eveyone needs to chill out and stop making assumptions. For the record, is is an AAP center, nothing so called about it!

If you've never had a good opinion, stay where you are. I really don't want you at our school. Seriously!

OP please inform the misinformed parent you overheard...

The PTA subsidizes field trips for every grade at Mosby Woods. The school also pays into the field trips and the parents do pay a portion. If a child can not afford their portion, the school or PTA takes care of them - every single child is afforded the opportunity to go on every field trip.

In the PTA budget, ther is a specific line item just for field trips - which are expensive! The PTA budgeted $8000 for these. These are very important to the school and to the PTA.

Mosby Woods offers 2 field trips per grade per year.

What are in house field trips - are these assemblies?? The Mosby Woods PTA fully funds 4 assemblies per year.

OP before posting a rumor, you should email the school or the PTA for clarification. Just a thought!!

When I saw your heading, I thought it was going to be about AAP overcrowding. My child attends a Fairfax City school and Mosby Woods is the AAP center he would feed into if found eligible (don't know yet, he is in 2nd grade, but NNAT score has him in pool) I understand that Mosby is busting at the seams - the facilities are not as nice, resources more scarce and they cannot guarantee an AAP class size of 30 or less. Class sizes are smaller at current, local elem school --it is a City school and a Title I school, meaning more money and resources. I honestly do not know what I would decide if he is found eligible. I think the AAP curriculum would benefit him, but seems like there are many other things to consider.

Gee, my son attends AAP at Mosby Woods and plans to go to on a field trip to the Archives this week....

Should I let him know that his trips are canceled and his class may not even exist?

Sarcasm aside- my two children (originally from Ffx City schools) have truly enjoyed their time at Mosby Woods.

What grades are they in? I think the overcrowding is a recent problem - as in a big jump in the number of kids getting into AAP. I did hear that it was a possibility that some eligible students in the spring may get an eligibility letter that says "you're in, but there is no space @ Mosby, you can go to [fill in the blank other LEVEL IV school]
