At first read, no I wouldn't expect it. But I'm not one to keep a well-stocked fridge either.
As I stopped and really thought about your question, my answer doesn't change. It's unfortunate, but I can't see how the landlord should be held responsible. And I hate this answer, because I'm a renter and I really wanted to side with the renter. |
| No. If you have renters insurance, you may have a provision. You may not. As a homeowner, when I lost everything in two fridge-freezers in the derecho this past July, my homeowners insurance did not cover contents insurance in fridge-freezers. Call your insurance company but not your landlord. |

I have a great landlord and value our excellent landlord tenant relationship so, no, I wouldn't bother him with this petty request.

| No. Appliance breakdowns happen. All the landlord is obligated to do is fix the appliance within a reasonable timeframe, not indemnify you to have 100% working appliances all the time. |

No, something like that is not the landlord's fault. I don't know if renter's insurance would cover that kind of loss.

No way and I rent. We lost our groceries during the derecho. My landlord has no control over Pepco and Mother Nature.
The only thing I have ever requested is when our oven elements broke was to overnight the replacement parts (offered to help pay) because I cannot eat out at many restaurants due to the fact I have Celiac Disease. For me, "reasonable timeframes" are different than others. |

We had this issue while renting in a large apt building. At first we did not ask them to pay for the groceries, but they really slacked off on fixing/replacing the fridge (took almost a week, even though other empty apartments in the building had working fridges that we could have used) and bc of their ineptitude, we lost a considerable amount. We do keep a well-stocked fridge and freezer.
We took an inventory of what we lost and they (begrudgingly) paid for half of it. |
