Real Mexican Food

Whenever we go to CA, I love the mexican food. It tastes different than any Mexican food we have had up here or other places. The spices are fantastic and its not like Tex Mex. Does anyone cook really good Mexican food, have any recipes, or know what spices they use?

The "Mexican" food here in the DC area is largely Salvadoran. That's because there are many Salvadoran immigrants here, but not Mexicans. IMO, it's still yummy, but it's not authentically Mexican.

Try a Rick Bayless book for ideas on Mexican cooking. He explains the difference between spicing in the different regions. I've had great food at Oyamel so that's worth a try.

I am married to a mexican. They use a lot of the same spices we use here -- particularly, cilantro, chipotle & jalapeno peppers, and lots of limes.

The best, most authentic Mexican food that DH and I have found here is a place called Tres Reyes up in MD, off Kenilworth Ave. Going there is like stepping into a restaurant in mexico city.

El Centro DF (U street, i think?) is okay...not totally authentic though. The food's been Americanized.

I lived in Mexico City for a few years and agree with PP, you have to go up to PG County, MD for the more authentic stuff - I think the area is called Riverdale. That's where the Mexican population is more congregated. I haven't been in a while, but we have liked El Tapatio in the past for their tacos. I'll have to try Tres Reyes next time we head out that way.

There's also a place up in Gaithersburg called Tortaco. They only have tortas and tacos and they are pretty good. The owner is a Mexican from Los Angeles and he has tried to emulate an LA taqueria up there.

I of the prevoius poster mentioned Los Tres Reyes it's in Edmonston, right off Kenniworth. There are roughly 3 or 4 other Mexican joints on the street parallel (as your driving towards East/West highway - to Kenniworth in the little town of Edmonston. Great taqueria's, even the coka (made w/sugar cane) tastes like in Mejico.

It's authentic Mexican as opposed to slasher joints. FYI, slasher joints are identified by the moniker authentic Mexican/Salvadorian...try as they might, they are NOT authentic.

Bon Appetit

I'm the PP who first mentioned Tres Reyes. Yes! It's Riverdale...thanks for clarifying. I am pleased that others know of it and like it, too!!

+1 for Tortaco. Love this place.

+1 My DH is from Mexico and this is the advice he gives. We've tried some of those places out in Maryland but they don't cook like his mom. If anyone has a recommendation for where we can get decent chilaquiles we'd appreciate it.

What's good on the VA side?

Herndon's got a huge Latino population -- there must be good eats in the area?

I'm the PP with the Mexican DH. Lots of people recommend Manassas, and also that stretch of highway in Alexandria (King's highway)? DH and I have tried many places in both areas, but nothing comes close to the area up in Edmonston/Riverdale.

P.S. I second the PP about the slasher joints...if you're looking for real mexican food, avoid any place that says "authentic mexican/salvadorean."

I'm the other PP with a Mexican DH. There's a good taco truck off the 14th St exit on highway 50? 66? (Sorry, my VA street knowledge is useless.) DH says it's on yelp. Tacos Chilango, I think, is the name.

Super Taco on Columbia Rd (between 18th and 17th, near CityBikes) is great. They have a bakery, chilaquiles, tortas. Food is very good and cheap.

Hmmm. Now I'm dreaming of Cochinita Pibil. Anyone know of a good place for that besides Oyamel? Add an ice cold Montejo and I'd be in heaven
