Washer/dryer shopping

I need a new washer dryer and I'm pretty much at square one. I don't even know whether or not I want a front loader, though that seems to be the majority of new washers out there. I've looked at a few consumer review websites but I'm a bit overwhelmed.

Looking to spend about $2k. And no gas hook up in laundry room so need an electric dryer.

Anyone recently do the research on this an find the best model? Any thoughts on what features I should look for (steam, front loading, the importance of capacity)?

We bought a Speed Queen. It's no frills but a workhorse. Made by a commercial washer/dryer company and built to last. Highly recommend.

Just bought LG steam front loader washer and dryer at BEst Buy for $809 each. I am in love! Did lots of research using consumer reports.

Was this the sticker price? Or was it on sale, discounted or something? Which model and size?

Make sure you purschase it in the store - that way delivery and installation is free. If you but it online they charge around 100. You also get a $100 rebate from PEPCO for the washer!

I have a regular LG frontloader, not steam, and am still in love with it. It's a great machine and the little song is adorable. Steam is supposed to be even better...

The size of the opening is a big deal - reaching the back of the drum through a tiny opening is gross. The distance from the bottom of the opening to the floor are very important to your comfort if they won't be on a pedestal. No-one ever mentions these details, but go through the motions of doing laundry on the different models and you'll see.

Does anyone have a top-loading LG (the one with the clear top)?

For some reason I just don't like the front loaders. I'm thinking of getting the new top loader instead.

Any thoughts?

We have a GE profile HE top loader. It was in the house we bought and I LOVE this washer. Ours is colossal capacity (that's what is says on the front) and man, can I get a lot of things in there. gets the clothes clean in a reasonable amount of time. (Our dryer is also a GE profile and does a great job.)

The problem with LG, Bosch and Samsung is that once they are our of warranty, you have to use proprietary repairman to get them fixed (meaning, the average appliance repair guy wont be authorized, have the training or have access to parts for repair). One of the few repair persons for these brands in Montgomery County is often backed up for weeks.....

The great thing about LG is that it's direct drive and has a good repair record.

What does direct drive mean?
