Just tell me where to live.

We're relocating to Northern Virginia in a few months. Here are a few bullet points about us- I'd love some opinions on where we should look to move.

-We will be renting, at least for a few years. DH and I have decided that we'd like to spend 1700-1900 a month on a 2 bedroom. (Wouldn't say no to a 3, but we have some other priorities ahead of that.)
-My husband will be working in McLean. He'd like under a 45 minute commute.
-We have 2 young children- I stay home with them. I would like to live in a safe, family-friendly area, preferably one with a high concentration of young families.
-Good schools is a strong plus.
-I like the suburbs. I know that's very boring of me, but it's true. My husband likes the suburbs as well, but likes them to have some local flavor, or at least be near something interesting.
-We're fine with an apartment, but if a townhouse was possible, we'd be even more fine with that. That's probably not relevant, just bringing it up.

So far I've be thinking about Reston- does that seem to fit the bill? Can anyone give any suggestions? Any places to stay away from?

Thanks.

Why not just McLean?

Can we afford a place there on our budget? I've always heard McLean is too expensive.

Reston near the town center is good and I think if you are a renter you can still go to their pools. Vienna is great, near the community center. Also near Madison HS there is a large apartment complex.

Fairfax or Herndon. Two and Three Bedroom apartments in McLean are usually in the 2k++ range. Reston Town Center apartments are up there as well. In Reston, Reston Landing and Charter Oak may be less though.

I'll second the recommendation for Vienna.

OP here. Thanks for all of the recommendations. Quick question- what's Herndon like?

It is similar to Reston. There's a nice complex that is very walkable called Monroe Place.

Herndon is not quite as nice as Reston. Reston is very planned community, lots of parks, green space, activities, etc.

Depends where you are in Herndon. You can get a decent size townhome in the Franklin Farm area in your price range. Reston is nice, tons of green space, but can be a bit iffy in some areas, I suggest staying North of the Dulles Toll Road. I'm in Fairfax, near Fair Oaks hospital, in a small townhome community and I love all the kids in the neighborhood. If you wanted to go even further out, you could probably do Ashburn and still be within his commute timeframe but there would be more in tolls to pay. The up side is Ashburn is VERY family friendly.
