Parenting -- Special Concerns
Maybe we've been under a rock, but we always donated used clothes to the Salvation Army till one of our friends called us out on it recently. We honestly had no idea of their homophobic policies till then. Where do you donate your used items to? Are there "gay friendly" organizations out there that accept furniture and clothing?

How about Goodwill?

I didn't know this about Salvation Army either. We donated a lot of stuff to them last year, but I don't agree with their policies, so I will donate elsewhere from now on. Thanks for posting.
We have refused to give them anything for many years now because of their policies
what are these policies? where can i find out more about them?
The Salvation Army not only refuses to allow gays and lesbians to join, it denounces homosexuality in its publications. In 2001, the Washington Post discovered that the Salvation Army and the Bush administration had made a deal that in exchange for the White House protecting the Salvation Army from anti-discrimination laws, allowing them to discriminate against GLBTQ people in hiring and domestic-benefits, the Salvation Army would spend $1 million on supporting Bush's "faith-based initiative."
I have not donated to Salvation Army for years because of their anti gay policies. Technically, if you tell them that you are gay or lesbian, their policies require that they decline your donation.
NEVER - they dump the unsold clothes in Africa by selling it by the pound and it floods the market leaving no room for locally made clothes
Do you have a link or online source for this info? I want to share it with a few people. Thanks! |
