Anti depressants from GP

Anonymous
I took anti depressants years ago to get through a rough period in my life. I am sort of in a rut right now and would like to try them again. I don't really want to go into therapy because my life is not unmanageable but I feel like I could use something to take the edge off - especially with PMS symptoms. I haven't approach my GP because I'm not sure if it would appropriate to ask. I have a good relationship with him so I'm not uncomfortable asking him but if general rules of primary care docs discourage this, I'm not going to bother. Does anyone have experience with obtaining anti depressant meds from their GP?

Yep, and he saved my life. Lots of anxiety, some depression, with suicidal thoughts--not that I would do it, but definitely thinking about it. Started me on Zoloft, and I was a new person within days. You could also try your GYN, since it's more depression and PMS stuff for you. Call one of them today. Good Luck!

I think your GP would give you a prescription. He/she would probably ask the standard--are you feeling like you're going to hurt yourself or other people questions. It probably would also make sense to revisit in 3 or so months to give the medicine a chance to work as well to make sure that it helps. GL.

I get anti depressant meds from my GP. Lots of people do. I'm sure there are some GPs who don't like to prescribe them, but it's my guess that they are the exception rather than the rule. Go ahead and ask and if he/she doesn't want to prescribe ask for a referral.

I get them from my GP too. I tried talking to my GYN about it, she dismissed my feelings. Will not be going back to her.

My GP and GYN both have prescribed them for me. When the prescription is about to expire, whoever I see first is often the one to renew it for me. Definitely talk to your GP.
