Live in Fairfax, Virginia. Neighbor's dogs are outside frequently and bark sometimes for up to an hour at a time. I've heard them as early as 6:15 am and as late as 2:00 am. Spoken with the owner's several times, but they have not been very accommodating. At most the dogs will be kept in for a day then it's back to the usual. I've called the police but they won't issue a summons if the owner's are not home which is frequently the case. Any advice or experience on successfully taking someone like this to court.
I know this bothers other neighbors as well. |
| You call the police first. It's covered by nuisance noise. I don't know about Fairfax but usually it's up to 11pm and before 7am, as far as the hours you're entitled to report about. Personally I'd probably shoot any dog who was allowed to bark longer than 5 minutes whenever the sun wasn't up. No sanctimonious "don't punish the dog because of the owner" comments unless you're volunteering to live next door to a yapping mutt. |
Call Animal Control and the SPCA. |
|
PP - Here. Animal control does not handle these types of the cases if the dogs appear well cared for - healthy, clean, fed, etc. That's the case here.
I've spoken to the police several times. As an aside, there is no time associated with nuisance noise in Fairfax. It can be considered a nuisance any time of day. I'm not interested in comments on how to fix the problem or contact the authorities. Been there, done that. I'm strictly interested in results obtained by swearing out a complaint before a magistrate. Has anyone tried this? Were you successful? |

OP, don't they have bad guys to catch? Isn't it worth moving, or at least thinking about it? Do you pay taxes? Is this how you would want your taxes to be spent, chasing barking dogs? Really? |
It's the way I want my taxes to be spent in PG County, so I support OP. Obnoxious entitled pricks who refuse to train their dogs and leave them in their yard all day are driving us all nuts. |
|
"All day" is very different than what op said, pp. |
Yes. There are bad guys to catch. I consider a dog owner who lets their dog bark all day to be a bad guy. |

Clearly, you don't get out much. |
| If I was woken up repeatedly by barking dogs at 2 am and 6 am, I would be livid and would definitely consider the shithead owners to be bad guys. |

OP-Here. Sometimes it's all day. Yesterday 13 hours. |
OP here again. It's just not worth going into the whole long story. It involves many years, mutliple dogs (from the same owners), other neighbors who have been bothered or harrassed and a variety of offenses. I narrowed the question down because I'm strictly interested in hearing from those who have gone to court. So I'm not interested in your opinion unless you have been to court. You're not here and you haven't witnessed the problem. Go spend your time on another thread where you might have something useful to contribute. |
| OP, are you a guy? |
| This whole thread seems like an example of nuisance barking. |
