driving distance upscale resort?

Anonymous
We want to go away for a luxurious weekend (no kids) for our anniversary in October. But need to be within 2-3 hours driving distance. Any ideas? We have already done the Inn at Perry Cabin, which was great, but looking to try something new.
Charlottesville? What's the nicest hotel there?
Any other ideas?

Greenbrier and Homestead - especially if you play golf. Even if you don't, there are plenty of other activities and spa treatments to enjoy. At Homestead, you have to "dress" for dinner - jacket for husband and a dress for you. It's kind of fun to do that, but by the third night, we were eating at the taverne, so that I don't have to put on a dress every night.

Keswick Hall is one of the nicest place in Charlottesville. Its a lovely property. I think the ownership group is related to the Inn at Perry Cabin actually. You could also go to Lansdowne or the Inn at Little Washington.

I am going to nemcolin in Oct. but just read some bad reviews on tripadvisor, and by someone on this board. The internet can drive you crazy.

I love the Greenbrier; nice space, golff and it is in the mountains. You can also take the cool bunker tour. Don't like the Homestead as much, more stuffy.

Again, at some point, you have to ignore the internet and take a chance. . . .

I've been to Nemacolin twice--for work-related social events--and LOVED it. My husband and I always use Trip Advisor and were surprised to see the negative reviews on there. The spa at Nemacolin is truly wonderful. Ifyou go, bring a bathing suit because there's an indoor pool. We've had friends go for getaway weekends and they loved it to. I say take a chance.

I think the Clifton Inn in Charlottesville is very nice.

Whether you will like Nemacolin or not is strictly a matter of your taste. We went and had a great time, but probably won't go back. I thought the decor and things like the Hummer off-roading were tacky, and I thought the food was so-so. On the other hand, our then 5 year old had a blast taking ski lessons and taking a dog sled ride, and the spa was terrific. We stayed in one of the townhouses which was very convenient and family friendly, but getting there was kind of a pain. The service was friendly but the employees were not what I would call polished professionals.

In short, do you prefer Vegas or Paris?

Nemacolin is beautiful this time of year. DH just returned from a weekend.
The Golf Course is excellent. The spa is wonderful.
Splurge on the accomodations and go for Falling Rock.

I assume that in your analogy Nemacolin = Vegas? I totally and completely disagree. Falling Rock hotel is beautiful and so are the grounds of the entire resort. The spa is great. It never occurred to us to check out the Hummer off-roading, since we were there for a relaxing weekend. Apparently, Nemacolin is what you make it, and it sounds like you made it feel like Vegas. Just another opinion. The OP has probably already been on her trip. HA.
