Airline "you get to sit with your kid fee"

What do you think about this? It's happened to me before, reserve seats together and get to the airport and find you're twenty rows away and apart from whoever you're flying with...

Well, the good news is, that a lot of people from the other current airline thread said that they would indeed switch to benefit parents and children sitting together (as I definitely think they should).

An extra $60 to have the pleasure of sitting next to my kid? Nah, I'll pass and let someone else enjoy his bathroom humor, endless questions and stories for two hours.

LOL! Like pp, I'll let someone else enjoy DS's company while I get some peace and quiet. Maybe I can read or take a nap for a change.

Yeah, I'm with the pp's. I kind of like the idea of someone else being forced to deal with my kids on a flight. I'm not sure what airline ninny thought of this, but it wasn't one of their brainier ideas.

It is, of course, another bullshit revenue generator for the airlines, and one of the reasons why I will only fly Southwest domestically.

+1000. I've also heard that JetBlue and Virgin are good. I am done with the others.

I'd pay it. I rarely pay for my own seat due to FF miles.

Go ahead. My daughter's a puker, and if you don't open the barf bag in time she'll puke into your lap. If the airlines want to deal with an angry passenger who had a strange child puke all over them, good luck.

I don't understand it. Even with elementary aged children, I bring snacks, gum, activities, etc. More importantly however, is if God forbid there was an "emergency", we'd be separated. How can I trust that another person would care for my child as I would?
Anonymous
I would not assume that others will deal with your kid on a flight. I have a pair of noise canceling headphones and I'm not afraid to use them.

The problem with paying is that they can switch your seat to another "premium" seat and you're still begging other passengers and flight crews to get you seated.

Eff them and their fees!

If we can't all sit together as a family, I would be annoyed if we booked the flight specifically to sit together, but would probably deal as long as one of us got to sit with our child. I think it depends on the age, too. An 8yo can probably sit alone. But what if you bought a seat for an infant with a car seat? or your child is 2 or 3?

Just tell whoever is seated near the child that your child gets severe motion sickness and will likely vomit. If they don't want to move, at least they have been warned.

I've had this happen to me. I'm a single mom with a 3yo, we've never traveled with another adult, it's always just been the two of us.

The last time we flew, they had him sitting 4 rows behind me. The gate agent told me that the seats could not be changed. I was polite and calm and told him, that's fine, but he's going to freak out when he realizes he's not only not sitting next to me, but can't even see me. I cannot guarantee that he will stay seated and buckled if I'm not next to him. Unless you want a screaming toddler on this flight, possibly delaying takeoff and definitely irritating everyone around him, I suggest you find a way to get us seats together.

Then I sat down and waited. 15min later, we had seats together.
