Arcola Elementary

My child is going to Arcola Elementary next year. Does anyone have a child who has gone there? How are the classes sizes and teachers?

My best friend's DS goes there. I think her DS might be the only non-hispanic student in his whole class - she says his entire class is hispanic. Even so, I haven't heard any other complaints, although frankly she is not too particular like many of the moms on here.

IMO - go private. I would never send my child there. Many of the non-hispanic kids in that neighborhood go to the Yeshiva I think (and are orthodox).

Of course, if you are hispanic, then you should be just fine.

I am not the poster, but I can see there could be barriers with a class of Hispanics only. It will be hard to set up play dates if the parents don't speak English and you don't speak Spanish. I find in my son's school that there are numerous Hispanic parents and even though my son would like play dates with the children, I will not be able to set that up.

Play dates. Give me a break. Is there a new law that kids can't leave the house and play with friends in the neighborhood? Drive around your own neighborhood between 4 and 6pm on a school day and tell me how many groups of kids who have chosen up sides to play football, kickball, basketball, or any other sport. How many kids do you see exploring the woods or making tree forts? Probably not too many because they are busy going on play dates.

.

Ever hear of a smart phone? Google translate? Your kid wants to play and you can't figure out how to make it happen? How stupid can you be?

Wow, OP here. No need for name calling. No, our family is not hispanic. I know Wheaton is diverse and I like that. Do you think the classes move at a slow pace due to a high number of Spanish speaking students? Are children grouped into various levels so all can accel? I am definitely interested in knowing if there is an active PTA. Thanks.

You probably need to visit the school. Find out if these students are new arrivals, near-ESOL, or what their status is. If half the school is either ESOL or close to ESOL level then the classes will crawl and your kid will be bored.
