Service for high quality scanning of large number of old photos? (mail away or local)

I've got a big box of old family photos that I need to have scanned and it would take forever to do it myself, plus I only have the scanner that came with my $150 printer so I bet there's better our there. I know there are places you can mail away to do this and I am a little bit nervous about that but it's a huge box of pictures and I'd like good quality scanning without spending thousands of dollars. Has anyone used scancafe, scandigital, or any other similar service for this? Would you recommend it? And if so how much did you pay? I'd like to get this done ASAP but I can wait for a groupon type deal if it will be much cheaper. Thanks so much!

I used ScanCafe after reading about it in the NYT. It went well from what I remember. It wasn't super cheap (a couple of hundred dollars for literally hundreds maybe thousands of negatives) but they send deals/coupons via email all the time, so you should be able to find a discount via the web.
