For reading its a testing system called M-Class, the same one they just in the higher grades.
I don't think there is a math test in K. |

| Mclass is conducted on a Palm Pilot. Teachers take running records while kids read and based on the number of errors made, as well as oral answers to comprehension questions after reading, an instructional (ie the level at which the teacher works with the student, not the independent reading level which should be lower) level for the student is determined. Mclass is administered 3 times per year in K-2. |

This may sound like a silly question but how does the teacher know if the student can read or not? My DC has been bringing home examples of work which include among other things, the sounds letters make. As DC can already read at a fairly high level its not clear to me if the teacher realizes who is reading and who isn't. |

| Ask your child if h/she has read a book to the teacher. My child said that he read three books last week, one per day for three days, to his teacher. They were clearly geared to his reading level. |

In K, especially this early, they start with letter identification and seeing if students can recognize letter sounds. They also do concepts about print (can a child identify a sentence? a letter? a word? Do they know that we read from left to right and go on to the next line at the end of a sentence? etc). What I was describing is how the test works once students can read (I taught first grade, so this is always where we started). They probably just started testing and are still feeling out where students are--by a week or two from now your child's teacher should have set up reading groups and should be sending home small books (called leveled readers) based upon your child's reading level. They will be simple, but the point of sending the books home is to make sure they are things that the child can read independently. If you don't start seeing that in the next two weeks or so, I'd email or call the teacher to talk about it more. |

MClass tests accuracy, oral comprehension and written comprehension (although kids are not required to pass the written component for passage to a higher reading level until 2nd grade). Words correct per minute is also calculated.
This is done 3 times a year (fall, winter, spring). Ask your teacher when these are and what the testing showed. The school is required under FERPA to tell you. The MClass is also known as the MCPSAP-PR, which is the test name. MClass refers to the delivery platform for the testing. You can read about MCPS-PR and MClass to some extent on the MCPS website. MCPSAP-PR levels correspond to the graded readers kids are given in class. |
