GT program at Barnsley

Anonymous
Hi!
Because of finances we are considering moving to public school next year and would LOVE for our child to apply to the GT program. We know it is a very rigorous program and hard to get into and we think it would be a good fit for our child. She is a great student, critical thinker, JH CTY student, and tests very well.

I need some advice regarding applying to the program. Have any of you come from a private school and tried to get into a GT (4th/5th) program? Are there any things that I should know beforehand? I am trying to access the application from the MCPS site, but it is not updated yet. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Is your child in 3rd grade now? You can only test into HGC during the child's 3rd grade year.

I assume you are referring to the HGC program (Highly Gifted Center) and not GT/LD (GT for LD students). Both programs are at Barnsley.

Hi OP here.
Yes, my child is currently a 3rd grader and we are interested in the HGC.

I have a child there. There is not much to the application process. For the child, there is just a test in January. Parents are asked to answer a few short questions. Her current teacher will write a rec too. The scores come back in April with an acceptance/wait list/decline. They tell you the average scores of those accepted but not the range which is quite frustrating. My child is happy there. Good luck.

Is there any benefit to living in the area? As in, if you live near Barnsley, are you more likely to get in?

P.S. What is GT for LD students?

No preference for neighborhood kids. 4 High school cluster feed into Barnsley. The benefit is not getting stuck with a long bus ride.

I can also add that there are 75 spots at Barnsley - 3 classes.

GT/LD is a Gifted & Talented program for students who have learning disabilities. We know several kids in the program at Barnsley. All are exceptional. They all had IEPs and/or 504 Plans in place at their home school.

You must live with the "region" for the HGC at Barnsley. You can't attend if you aren't part of that particular region. As a PP said, 4 clusters feed into Barnsley.

Can you get in to Barnesley GT/LD with only a 504 plan? I thought that program required an IEP.

Also, do you know if kids have to be failing or not meeting IEP targets in their home school to be accepted to Barnesley GT/LD?
