This is so weird but I've been taking Theralogix Core Nutrition prenatal multi vitamins while TTC. I pulled out a handful from the orig bottle they came in and I put them in a small container to carry in my purse. Its one of those "days of the week" pill containers you buy at a drug store. The vitamins are pink oval shaped vitamins, and I've noticed that they have developed little brown spots on them. They are speckled. At first I thought the outside coating may have just chipped from clanking around in the container all day. But upon further examination, I think it's actually mold!!! Ewwww!!! I'm so grossed out by this. The container I put them in is not air tight but it is designered to hold pills. I had other supplements in the same container at one point, but it appeared clean. The pills that are still in the orig bottle have not developed spots. Any ideas what is causing this? Anyone have this same thing happen? I had taken some with spots back when I thought it was just a chipped outer coating and now I'm panicking at the thought of having taken moldy vitamins. Ick!!!!! Hopefully it's not harmful?!
Are you sure it's mold, because I think prenatal vitamins regularly develop spots on the outside.
I am sure you will be just fine. If they were in there during the past few weeks, when DC was doing its prime time swamp thing, the humidity might just have been too much for the container to do much good.

Or prenatals just develop spots I really have no idea but even my sheets damp last month so I was guessing.

OP here. Thanks. I'm 99.9% sure it's mold. I have been watching it closely and noticed each spot starts out dark and shiny (like it's wet) then fades to a lighter more matte spot. So gross. Yes, maybe it was just enough humidity in the air to trigger the response it what I'm betting. I'm going to toss the spotted ones.

I would throw them out or take them back to the store/pharmacy just to be safe.
If they are prescription pills, then make take them to the pharmacist to look at. |
Oh, yeah, that doesn't sound normal. I might try to take them back, actually.
i got some prenatal from wal greens a prescription and it is only two months old I hadn't been taking em like I was supposed to they have been chilling on my refrigerator and I went to take one and it was molding , I had black spots an a few days later it was eating up the rest of the pills, I don't like medication but vitamins' ?

Do they have iron in them? It's actually pretty common for multivitamins w/iron in them to get dark spots when the iron oxidizes (rusts).
I am pretty sure it's harmless, but I'd toss them anyway. |
Did they get left in the hot car or something? I doubt it's mold either, but would toss em too!
I had the same thing happen with the Theralogix prenatal. I called and spoke to someone in their nutrition office who said it wasn't mold, but likely a reaction with the iron. She said the integrity of the vitamin shouldn't be compromised, but that I shouldn't store them in the bathroom anymore. They need to be in a cool, dark place. Avoid humidity all together.
It's probably iron.
Don't most vitamins come with a desiccant in the bottle?
My prenatal vitamins had the same problem but i noticed it the same day that i got them from the pharmacy. It kept spreading so i took them to the parmasist to take a look at them and she told me it was mold and that i shouldn't take them and replaced the whole bottlw and vitamins too. I would go ask for sure but definately dont take them anymore het some new ones.
Call the number on the bottle.
