Boots to wear with dresses or pants

Anonymous
Can anyone recommend some boots that would work with either skirts or pants? I need a lower heel (2 inches or less). Almost all of them have buckles around the ankles and while I like that look, boots can look kind of thick or slouchy around the ankles under any circumstances, and the buckle doesn't help. For pants I wouldn't care, but it makes me feel really chunky in a skirt or dress. Oh, and it would be nice to find them less than $250.

If you've found some or seen some I'd love to hear about them! Thanks.

A lot of women on this board are huge Frye fans. Check out the Frye line for various styles and heel heights. Zappos has free shipping both ways so order a few and send back what doesn't fit.

Cole Haan Air something tall boots. Very comfortable and classy. Make sure the calf fits, without leaving a gap. They are around $400 but you can always get them on sale at Bloomingdale for half.

I wore these for 2 years now. Heels are about 3 inches but still very comfortable. They have a wedge version this year.

Are you looking for flat riding-style boots or boots with a thinner, dressier heel? I have both types from Cole Haan and love them both but wear them differently.

The riding boots I wear mostly with pants (cords, jeans, black pants) tucked in. I also wear them with leggings and sweater dresses. If I wore longer / midi skirts, I would wear them with skirts, too. I got them for ~$200 from Zappos about two summers ago. You might find good deals on last year's designs.

The others have a 1.5-2" heel and were probably about $200 from Nordstrom's almost ten years ago. I wear these with knee-length skirts and dresses all winter. I have worn them under jeans when traveling, but have never tucked jeans into them. I'm not a fan of jeans tucked into these types of boots though.

As a PP mentioned, make sure they fit you properly in the shaft width. If you wear them with tights or leggings, you should be able to slide only one or two fingers in the top. That can make it tricky to wear the same pair for both tights and jeans, unless the jeans are practically jeggings or are worn outside the boot.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm planning to wear them mostly with skirts or under pants. I don't think that tucking my jeans in (as much as I like it on others) is my best look. Side question-- is there an age where tucking your pants in starts to look silly? Just wondering in case I change my mind.)

Do the Cole Haan boots feel like their shoes? I've tried on their shoes in the past and they tend to really hurt my feet. I don't mind wearing a riding style even with skirts, but I'd prefer something that isn't completely flat. Even 1 inch can help (as long as it isn't one of those thick serrated rubber soles).

I just bought these to wear with skinny jeans and skirts. Love them. Super comfy! They're on sale right now.

el naturalista makes a number of boots that are really great with both jeans and skirts, and are comfortable too. You can find some of them at zappos, but a lot more at their own site (elnaturalista.com). However, a lot of them are priced around the 300 mark.
