Can a 20mg Adderall Xr be halved?

Anonymous
Or do we need a new prescription? My child's prescription seems to be way too high, and I'm going to have to have the script lowered. This is a really expensive medication even with insurance. Can it effectively be "halved" or because it is an extended release drug is that not possible?

I don't want to mess with the medication if I'm lowering the effectiveness, but not spending another $75 would be a relief. Any thoughts on this?

This is a question for your doctor.

You can't halve any XR meds-- you will be releasing the medication all at once, which is dangerous even if it is a half dose. Definitely get a new prescription.

This is my understanding as well. Mthere is something about the coating of the pill and if you break the integrity, you can't use the pill. But, you should check with your doctor because maybe there is something different with this medication. Our XR medication is capsule and it has to be swallowed.

Generics are much cheaper, if cost is a concern.

Or get the 20 mg but not the XR. I learned from our dr that you can have up to a 25% variation in the generic. I took adderall for a sleep disorder and I had a terrible reaction to the generic. When I asked the dr she explained about the variation, so I would be very careful about going generic. I believe that you can get a regular old non XR pill (not a capsule) that you can split.

The doctor told us to open the capsule and sprinkle 1/2 on my child's food. Everything I've found says otherwise but the dr says it can be done.
