Great School Pyramid/Family Friendly Neighborhood within 20 minute commute of Reston

Anonymous
DH and I both work in Reston. We currently live in Loudoun (more for the money) but now that our eldest is heading to K next year we are thinking we want to move to Fairfax County. What are the better school pyramids within a 20 minute commute of Reston (during normal rush hour, not 20 minutes at 3am)? I've heard good things about Oakton HS and Madison HS, but I'm sure there are others. Can anyone recommend a specific school pyramid or even better a family friendly neighborhood that meets this criteria. We are looking to spend upper 600's - mid 700's. Would like 4 bedrooms, garage, access to some type of community pool (either HOA or something we can join)

TIA!

We live near the bikepath in Vienna and our neighbors commute by bike to Reston. I think all the neighborhoods in Vienna, Oakton, and Reston are pretty nice. Lakevale and Shouse Village have a community pool built into the HOA costs. All the rest I know of you pay to join a pool whether in Reston, Oakton, or Vienna.

I recommend the Town of Vienna, Falls Church City, or McLean (22043).

Why not just live in Reston?

If you really want a pool community, Lakevale homes usually are mid 700s-850 but that is really a fantastic community to be in. Your kids would walk to Elementary and High School and FHES has LLIV if your kids need it. I think Shouse Village (which is the exact same builder as Lakevale) are even slightly higher. Otherwise, do Reston or you have to get your swim club membership separately.

There are many swim and tennis clubs in McLean which include:

McLean Swim and Tennis
Kent Gardens Swim
Chesterbrook Swim and Tennis
Tuckahoe Swim and Tennis (year-round)

Mid 500s to mid 600s, Fair Oaks Estates off West Ox. A little higher priced and bigger homes in neighboring Century Oak. Both go to Oakton HS.

Buy close to the high school. Redistricting happens all too often. Think of the folks in hunter mill estates who now are slotted for south lakes. No longer oakton. You may pay more to be closer to the high school, but the price is all about the high school.

Keep in mind that Fairfax is currently undergoing a boundary study. These neighborhoods are pretty far from Oakton and could be affected.

Why are you leaving Loudoun? There is nothing wrong with their schools.

OP, if it's the age-old AAP vs. FUTURA issue for you & your family, please let me tell you that I am very happy that my DC doesn't have to attend a different school now. There is only one other FUTURA student w/him out of a class size of 26. Subject matter is exciting & engaging with committed teachers.
I know your DC is going into K so maybe it's the half-day K issue which is troublesome indeed especially for two-income families.

There are homes in Vienna under $700,000 and all the schools there feed into Madison.

These neighborhoods were just redistricted a few years ago. Don't think they would move them again any time soon. These neighborhoods are not involved in any current or planned boundary studies..

Only if you are talking about Town of Vienna. Homes in the county with Vienna addresses can feed into Madison, Marshall, McLean, Oakton, South Lakes, Langley or Falls Church, although most houses under $700K will be older ramblers in the Town and some nearby parts of 22180 like Dunn Loring Woods.
