Hi, wondering how english is applied in the partial immersion programs. Are students also broken up into reading groups for English in Kindergarten? |
From what I recall, there is some differentiation in reading based on level even in the full immersion K class of a partial immersion school. There are different levels of books for the kids. I think they have letters indicating which level they are. At some point during the year, you'll get a sense of this. And your child will even bring home certain books from class in the immersion language based on his or her level. |
PP here. To clarify--in our case, DS was in full immersion Kindergarten at a partial immersion school. So for that year, he was taught reading in the target language. And there was differentiation. Starting with grade 1, he was taught reading in English. |
Thanks PP, DC is in a partial immersion program which is supposedly full immersion in K and then switches to partial in 1st or 2nd I believe. So I guess what you're saying is in the first year reading groups are only in the target language but English reading groups are introduced in 1st grade?
I'm curious as DC is very advanced in reading but in the target language thats a whole different animal... I was hoping that there was some reading in English for K. |
PP again. The class would go the library once a week, and DS would bring home books in English, but aside from that, I don't recall any English reading instruction in K. I think picking up reading in the other language during K slowed him down a bit in terms of his English reading, but everything worked out beautifully 1st grade. Since your DC is already doing well with reading English, supplementing at home should be fine. Good luck with everything! |
