Very TMI question regarding days before your period

Anonymous
I've realized that in the day or two before and early in my period I become very gassy, usually smelly, and get a mild case of diarrhea. Does anyone else experience this? It's gross and obviously embarrassing. Anyone know why there's a connection between my reproductive system and my excretory system?

For me it's on the first full (heaviest) day of my period. I do not know why, but it's clockwork.

I experience the same symptoms. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. I don't know what the connection is, but it's the same every month.

I get constipated right before my period.

Hormones ladies, it's all an imbalance of or fluctuation of hormones.

+1 Always in a good mood when AF arrives b/c this little problem resolves itself.

I've always had the runs and gas right before/during my period. Plus bloating and menstrual cramps. It's sexy time... NOT.

Prostaglandins necessary to stimulate uterine contractions also stimulate the bowels. You can lessen the effect somewhat by balancing prostaglandin pathways via good omega balance. Eat well - fewer vegetable oils and grains, more fish and vegetables.

I had constipation in days before my period, then diareha once it came. Turned out that I had large fibroids which were restricting bowel movements. Found when ttc, surgically removed.

I also have this on the first day. I have always thought it was related to the junk food I inevitably splurge on during PMS!

For me, this was related to endometriosis and abated once I had a laparoscopy and then two pregnancies. There were adhesions on my bowels and in fact one ovary was actually adhered to a section of bowel. Yuck.

I see a gastroenterologist for various issues, and was told that it is common for GI conditions to flare up around your period.

I also find it interesting that probiotics are indicated both for feminine issues and GI issues. No idea why, but another clue that feminine hormones seem to have some link to digestive operations.
