Hiring a driver to take your kid to school

Anonymous
I've noticed several times over the past year people on my neighborhood listserv looking to hire people to drive their kids to and from schools every day. These are people in the city who send their kids to private schools in suburbs. One person even mentioned hiring taxis or town cars to do this every day. I'd just like to understand the reasoning being sending your child to a school that doesn't have bus access or that you're not personally able to drive them to. If you do this, can you explain why?

Do you really don't understand this? My kid goes to a public charter school that's about 5 miles/20 minutes away. It's a great school and it's a great fit for her, but I wish it was closer. I work from home, so I can drive her to and from, but sometimes I have meetings to attend that conflict with pick up time. I wish we had a school bus, but we don't. (I'm in Baltimore and the city doesn't provide bussing.) I bill my hour at $50 an hour. A driver would cost me $15 an hour.

This is a silly question. They send their kids to that school because that is where they think they will get the best education (or easy of college entrance). Making the trip to get them there and back everyday interferes with work. Work is required to afford these schools.

Why not just teach your kids to use public transportation?

This is the 11:00 poster. Because she's in kindergarten. I'm saving that lesson until first grade. :p

We do this because my DD has learning issues and we found a school that was a good fit for her. DH and I both work FT, and travel occasionally. On days when one of us is traveling there is no way for one person to get both kids to their schools on time. So the older child takes a taxi. Pick up is not a problem since pick up times are sufficiently staggered.
