2nd prescription of penicillin just to make it 10 days?

My 20 month old was diagnosed with strep throat Thursday morning. He just finished day 3 (what was to be the 6th dose) of penicillin. Ds spits out the meds, causing me to use half again for each dose. Then there is the dose I wasted thinking juice would hide it. There is no way this prescription will last 10 days. I don't want to go shorter time though for fear the strep will come back. Should I just call doc and ask for more or will pharmacy just help me? This seems like a silly question even as I type it, but wondered if any others have faced this and what you did?

My guess is that your doctor will need to call in a refill.

The pharmacy won't dispense a thing without the ped calling it in. I always used the syringe and inject it in the corner of the cheek. Penicillin tastes nasty. My kids always take their meds and hate that pink crap.

Check with your doc but mine once told me that if the kid gets about half the dose in, you are good. At this age they assume some spillage when they prescribe the dosage.

Call your doc and tell them what's going on. Call first thing on Tuesday, assuming you make it that far with what you currently have.

My son HATES amoxicillin and the only way I can get it in him is to measure the amount, put it in a small glass bowl, then mix in at least twice that amount of Hershey's chocolate syrup and spoon feed it to him, with ice chips in between. FWIW, he's 7 years old!

Call the pediatrician and explain, it's nothing they haven't heard before! My DD was prone to strep when she was younger and hated that pink liquid amoxicillin so much that she asked the doctor to teach her to swallow pills at 7. I still have trouble with pills but she's just fine.

We ALWAYS end up in this position due to the spitting up and the failure to swallow. Call the pediatrician ASAP.

Thanks all, I sent a note to the doc via his Medline. Cant believe we are nearly out. Wonder if there are penicillin suppositories?!?

Some pharmacies can give you a choice of flavorings to add.

We had to go to capsules for my gagging DD. I would break them open, cut a marshmallow in half and put the powder on the sticky cut edge. It was the only thing that would cut the taste enough for her to get it in.
