1st Grade Curriculum

Anonymous
I would like a list of things that a 1st grader needs to know or areas where I can teach/help him out at home.

He was assigned to a teacher who is the least favorite at our school....and I'm on the PTA so clearly that didn't help.

It's the first week of school and I am keeping an open mind that this year will be better or nothing like the previous years. But I don't want to to wait until it's too late to find out that I could be working with my child on specifics. I understand reading and simple addition/subtraction - anything else? TIA.

Look on the MCPS website for the Grade 1 curriculum 2.0.

You can find all of the core curriculum to download:

Here is the reading one, for instance.

What I would do: Just relax for right now. Don't expect the worst. You can supplement as needed along the way. You'll see homework coming home that will give you hints as to what they are learning. You can check out their books and all that as well.

Even with the "worst" (and that is completely subjective...your experience might be totally different!) teacher, your kid will be okay Maryland teachers are held to very high standards...they have to be, because of the testing they do.

Easy stuff you can do: Sight words (look up the first grade lists), reading to your dc every day for at least 10 minutes, using supplements like Starfall.com, and staying on top of what the teacher is teaching to make sure your little one isn't falling through the cracks with his understanding.

FWIW: I am a former first grade teacher in Maryland.
