Cropped tops

I remember back in high school (80s/early 90s) usually the 'bad' girls (rebellious types, had boyfriends usually) liked to wear cropped tops. Now, mostly I see such tops on celebs, like this one posted today of Mila Kunis (here, it's also a combination of low-rise jeans, though):


In the real world, did you wear such tops or know of people who do/did? I was always slender, but would have felt self-conscious to dress like this. I'm also not the type who wears sports bras for workouts (but that's another story, since I'm small busted and don't feel I want to show what little I've got).

In the 90's I always wore them, but I was 17 in '97. Was never "skinny", always very curvy, but with a very flat stomach (prior to 2 kids.
