Romney Holds Party for Top Donors on Bermuda-Flagged Yacht

The story says the yacht is Cayman Island flagged, but it's clearly a Bermuda flag.

"Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign toasted its top donors Wednesday aboard a 150-foot yacht flying the flag of the Cayman Islands" (Actually Bermuda)

"I think it's ironic they do this aboard a yacht that doesn't even pay its taxes," said a woman who lives aboard a much smaller boat moored at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina."

I think there is something very telling that Romney, a man who knows his way around a foreign tax haven, would host his top donors -- individuals who likely have a similar familiarity with foreign tax havens -- on a yacht bearing the flag of a foreign tax haven. I can imagine Romney standing onboard the Bermuda-flagged boat giving a rousing speech in which he accuses President Obama of not understanding America and/or believing in American exceptionalism. But, no surprise that a businessman who pioneered off-shoring also off-shores his parties.

We really have to get serious about passing real campaign finance and disclosure. This is a very serious threat to true democracy. The senator in the footage thanked corporations like Aflac and Blue Cross/Blue Shield (both with major interest in health care laws). One of which is a provider that I pay every two weeks...
