Taking Bus & Cab with Baby?

Hi. I am an expecting mother who lives downtown and never drives in city (preference & parking cost). Do mothers take babies in cabs without car seat? What about the bus? If so, at what age? I am comfortable with metro but not sure about other public transportation options. I see there is an old post about germs and I get that risk but what about other safety issues. Thanks!

I think it's fairly safe to take your child on a bus (being a pedestrian near a bus is another story, though). I don't know about cabs.

I took my baby in a bjorn on the bus pretty early on. Folding up a stroller and negotiating that and a baby was too much effort. I ended up relying on the kindness of strangers when I did that (although people did step up and help.)
